This is your

Graduate Student
Union

We are your newly formed X Graduate Students’ Union! The X Graduate Students’ Union is governed by a Graduate Executive Committee (four elected Executive Members) and a Graduate Council (seven elected Graduate Directors). The XGSU  employs one staff member that works to service the membership and improve your student experience by providing cost-saving services, and community building events.

We are a membership-driven union, representing over 2500 full-time and part-time graduate students at X University. We are dedicated to supporting your graduate journey through offering services such as health and dental coverage, funding for course unions and hosting events to build a community on campus.

X University

Starting June 1, 2021 our organization will be renamed to the X Graduate Student’s Union, or XGSU.

Context

For years, Indigenous students, faculty, staff, and community members have been calling for our university to be renamed and for the statue of Egerton Ryerson to be taken down.

In June of 2021, the XGSU Board voted to change our name to the XGSU in solidarity with Indigenous students leading the X University campaign and proactively renaming the university instead of continuing to wait for the administration to do so.

X University Goal

The goal of the campaign is not to historically erase the namesake of the university, but to delegitimize his legacy and remove the continuous pain and trauma that Indigenous students, faculty, staff and community members have been forced to carry with them by being associated with the name of a man responsible for a legacy of violence. Further, the campaign seeks to show just how easy it is to change the name if there is the political will to do it.

Instead of saying “Ryerson University”, you can say “X University”. All it takes is the political willingness to challenge the status quo.
